Qualcomm introduces the Snapdragon X Elite, the world's fastest NPU for laptops. With the Qualcomm AI Engine and 45 TOPS AI performance, the chip promises exceptional speed and security.

Qualcomm has been trying for many years to bring their Windows on Arm chips up to a high level, with very varying results. But now they're introducing the Snapdragon X Elite, which Qualcomm calls "the world's fastest NPU for laptops". The new Snapdragon X Elite laptop chip features the Qualcomm AI Engine with the integrated Qualcomm Hexagon NPU (Neural Processing Unit) with 45 TOPS of AI performance.

In comparison, Intel's current Core Ultra "Meteor Lake" CPUs can only achieve 10 TOPS, while AMD's new Ryzen 8040 "Hawk Point" APUs only have 16 TOPS. Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X Elite chip has 75 TOPS of AI performance across CPU + GPU + NPU and micro NPU, and it is produced on the 4nm process by TSMC.

On the CPU side, we have the Arm-based Oryon CPU with 12 cores on the Snapdragon X Elite or 10 cores on the Snapdragon X Plus. Inside the chip we find Qualcomm Adreno GPU, Hexagon NPU and Sensing Hub. There is support for up to 64GB of LPDDR5 memory, with a memory bandwidth of up to 136 GB/s.

Qualcomm also includes the latest Wi-Fi 7, Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 6 support, as well as the new Snapdragon X65 5G modem. Qualcomm explains its AI capabilities on the Snapdragon X Elite: "Snapdragon X Elite features the leading Qualcomm AI Engine with an integrated Qualcomm Hexagon NPU, delivering breakthrough experiences in creativity, video conferencing, security and productivity assistants. The Snapdragon X Elite is capable to run generative AI LLM models on more than 13 billion parameters on-device at incredibly fast speeds."

Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X Elite has 12 CPU cores, which can boost up to 3.8GHz or up to 4.3GHz in single-core or dual-core boost modes. The Snapdragon X Plus, on the other hand, has 10 CPU cores that run up to 3.4GHz across all cores. On the GPU side, Qualcomm promises their new Adreno GPU has up to 4.6 TFLOPs of performance, with the Snapdragon X Elite supporting up to 4K 120Hz and even triple 4K external displays.”
