Apple is expected to create an extensive supplier ecosystem in India, hire many new people directly in the next three years and emerge as a potential R&D hub.

Experts are of the view that as India becomes an important market for both exports and sales of Apple products, it will trigger a vibrant supplier ecosystem. Furthermore, it can also become a potential R&D hub for software-to-silicon design. Apple's ecosystem of component makers and suppliers could collectively employ about 500,000 people in India directly over the next three years - a significant increase - as Apple moves at least half of its existing supply chain from China to India, senior officials told sources at the Economic Times in India.

Apple seeks to increase independence from China, also aims to increase Indian value addition from its suppliers in line with the approach it has adopted in China, they added. "In China (Apple) has the highest domestic value added in the world which is 28%. The value added (in India currently) is around 11-12% and is expected to increase to between 15% and 18%," said a person who was cited. "What (Apple) is doing today (in India) will be practically five or six times bigger."

Experts are of the view that as India becomes an important market for both exports and sales of Apple products, it will potentially spawn is extensive supplier ecosystem. Furthermore, it can also become a potential R&D hub for software-to-silicon design. "The current Indian value-added, which is a contribution to the dollar value of the total manufacturing and design costs of an iPhone produced in India, is 14% compared to 41% in China," said Neil Shah, vice president at Counterpoint Research. "With the right investments and expansions, Apple has the potential to increase that to over 20% in the next three to five years," he added.

Last week, ET reported that Apple has become the country's largest creator of unskilled jobs, with 150,000 jobs created across the phone maker's supplier network since the start of a production-based incentive scheme for smartphones launched in August 2021. Additionally, around 300,000 people are estimated to be employed indirectly .

Apple's suppliers in India that rank as the biggest job creators include Tata Electronics, which makes cases for iPhones at its facility in Hosur, Salcomp Technologies, which makes cases and power adapters, and Foxlink and Sunwoda, which makes cables and batteries for iPhones. In addition, several thousand new jobs have been created by Avary Technologies, CCL Industries and Flex, suppliers of iPhone sub-assemblies and components.

Recent reports have suggested that the iPhone maker expects to produce 50 million units annually from India by 2030, which is almost a quarter of its entire iPhone production. Currently, it is estimated that units based in India supply around 7% of all iPhones sold globally.
