AMD's new Zen 5-based Ryzen AI 300 series "Strix Point" APUs are now available, with fresh leaks about the more powerful "Strix Halo" APU releasing in 2025.

AMD's new Zen 5-based Ryzen AI 300 series 'Strix Point' APUs are finally out in the open, with some fresh leaks about the more powerful 'Strix Halo' APU that will be released in 2025.

The upcoming Strix Halo APU will have up to 16 cores and 32 threads of Zen 5 processing power, and a massively upgraded RDNA 3.5 GPU system compared to the current Strix Point APUs that will deliver discrete GPU-level performance. According to the latest leaks, the Strix Halo APU will have a large package area of 37.5 x 45.0mm and use the same FP11 package. The APU itself will be much smaller, with the largest die on the Strix Halo APU, the RDNA 3.5 GPU, using 307mm² of die area.

The two Zen 5 CCDs will use 66mm² of die area, with a total die area (Strix Halo is multi-chip) of 439mm². Thermal design data has been leaked for AMD's upcoming Strix Halo APU, where we can expect three different configurations: 55W, 80W and 120W. These figures do not take into account memory power consumption, where AMD says it will be 9W power consumption for 32GB, and 13W power consumption for 128GB RAM.

AMD's new Strix Halo APU is compared to an Intel system with a GN21-X6 graphics card. This codename refers to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU capable of drawing much more power than 80W. In this situation, a system with an RTX 4070 80W would have the same power requirements as a system based on the Strix Halo APU.

AMD is expected to use 40 Compute Units of RDNA 3.5 GPU power in its Strix Halo APU, which is a huge improvement over the 12-16 Compute Units of RDNA 3.5 GPU found inside the Strix Point APU that has just been released.

This means that we can expect over 2x gaming performance from the Strix Halo compared to the Strix Point, on par with an RTX 4070 80W. That's not bad at all for an APU. I can see AMD having a fruitful year in 2025 with the Strix Halo dominating laptops and handhelds, and I can't wait to see what designs will be powered by the Strix Halo in 2025.
