The US again limits chip sales to China and affects AI development. Nvidia and other chip manufacturers fall on the stock market.

This is not the first time that the US has restricted the sale of chips to China. In October, they introduced a series of rules to prevent the country from procuring key components for the advances it is making in AI. This is particularly relevant as advanced language models such as GPT-4 require more and more computing power.

Nvidia is one of the companies that has benefited from this AI boom. They produce graphics chips responsible for driving the technology behind the most prominent AI developments, such as ChatGPT from OpenAI or Bard from Google.

Under the first limitation, Nvidia responded by developing a smaller capability chip specifically for the Chinese market. But under the new controls potentially implemented, even that chip would be restricted for export.

After this report was published, shares of Nvidia and AMD fell 2%, while Qualcomm fell just over 2%, and other manufacturers such as Marvell and Broadcom fell 1%."
