Apple is expected to introduce MagSafe charging to iPad Pro models in 2024. This could mean glass backs and open up new MagSafe accessory options!

Apple introduced the MagSafe standard to iPhones in 2020, and the iPhone 12 models were the first smartphones from the company to feature this wireless charging and accessory attachment technology. The following year, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple planned to introduce the MagSafe standard on iPad Pro models soon. Unfortunately, this plan was not implemented until now and we have had no update on the matter since then.

The latter changes today. According to a new report from MacRumors, the next version of the iPad Pro, expected to launch in 2024 in screen sizes of 11.1 inches and 13 inches, may support MagSafe charging. The publication says it received this information from "a source familiar with companies that manufacture magnets for Apple products." iPad Pro models with MagSafe may have glass backs.

Currently, there is no information on which MagSafe standard Apple will use for iPad Pro models, that for iPhones (MagSafe for wireless charging and accessory attachment), or that for Macs (MagSafe 3 for wired charging). However, people expect the company to use the MagSafe standard for iPhones on iPads as well.

If Apple goes ahead with it, it will have to offer backs made of glass on the iPad Pro models, which could make them more susceptible to damage than metal backs. On the plus side, people will be able to use MagSafe wireless chargers with their iPads, which could be very convenient.

In addition, they will also be able to attach MagSafe accessories to iPads, which could open up a whole new world of possibilities. Since iPads have larger batteries than iPhones, Apple can offer faster charging speeds with MagSafe on its tablets. It can also implement the MagSafe-based 15W Qi 2 wireless charging standard on iPads. With the launch not too far away, expect more leaks on the subject soon.
