Netflix plans to open "experiential" locations, called Netflix Houses, where fans can immerse themselves in their favorite shows and experience themed restaurants and gift shops, the company announced Tuesday. The streaming giant plans to build these locations by converting empty retail space into shopping malls.
The first two locations are expected to open in 2025 in Dallas, Texas and a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. "At Netflix House, you can enjoy regularly updated immersive experiences, indulge in retail therapy, and savor—literally—your favorite Netflix shows and movies through unique food and beverage offerings," said Marian Lee, Netflix's chief marketing officer, in a declaration.
In recent years, Netflix has opened more than 50 pop-up locations in 25 cities, showcasing some of its hit movies and series like "Squid Game." This time, the locations will be permanent, and Netflix plans to open more in the future.
This project comes as several US department stores try to adapt to changes in consumer habits and the rise of online shopping. In late February, Macy's announced the closure of 150 branches across the United States. In recent years, Neiman Marcus, Lord & Taylor and Barneys New York have all declared bankruptcy.
