The building game genre has been around for many years, with iconic games such as SimCity 2000, Banished and Cities: Skylines among the genre's biggest influences. Unfortunately, many of these games are single-player only, which is unfortunate for those who enjoy playing with friends. Many building games that include multiplayer features are versus games, but there are a few that include online co-op options. However, most of these games are strictly focused on building, while some of them - like Parkitect and OpenTTD - don't fit the description as well as others. Either way, fans of building games should enjoy many of these Co-Op games.

1. Kingdoms Reborn:

This building game, reminiscent of Banished, has players build a kingdom and manage resources as one of several civilizations with their own unique styles. Kingdoms Reborn stands out by using a unique map system for building, and online co-op play is another welcome addition.

2. Anno 1800:

Available on: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S

This entry in the long-running Anno series takes place in the 19th century and challenges players to build a metropolis. Anno 1800 is a highly strategic builder where players have to worry about logistics, economy and diplomacy.

3. OpenTTD:

Available on: PC

Although more of a tycoon game than a full-on builder, OpenTTD has many of the gameplay mechanics that building game fans enjoy. The game is about driving the transport of cities across the country.

4. Tropico 6:

Available on: PC, PS4, Xbox One

This building game takes place on an archipelago where players must manage resources, engage in light diplomacy and try to grow their city. Tropico 6 is one of the best installments in the long-running series.

5. Age of Empires 2:

Available on: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S

This combination of real-time strategy and building quests encourages players to lead and manage one of several civilizations. The game's Definitive Edition makes it easy to play cooperatively with friends through Steam.

These building games are not only great games, they also support cooperation, allowing players to build with their friends. With their different themes and gameplay mechanics, they are sure to satisfy any builder enthusiast.

6. Northgard

Available on: PC , Switch , PS4 , Xbox One , Android

This Nordic-themed strategy game sets players on building and expanding a settlement through careful management of their resources and Vikings. In each game, players take on the role of a unique clan, often trying to conquer as much of the continent as possible.

Northgard also features a Conquest Mode that allows players to play through challenging scenarios in online co-op. In addition, the game's multiplayer mode allows players to play both with and against their friends.

7. Park architect

Available on: PC

This throwback to tycoon games is a nostalgic business sim that tasks players with building and managing an amusement park. The nostalgic gameplay in Parkitect is distinctly reminiscent of games like Rollercoaster Tycoon, and while players aren't building a literal city, the game's gameplay loop is a similar affair.

In Parkitect, players must build and manage their park by creating rides, managing finances/logistics and ensuring that their customers are satisfied. The game features both a campaign and a sandbox mode, both of which can be played with up to eight players in online co-op.
