Bethesda's Todd Howard confirms that Fallout 5 is a long time away, despite renewed interest in the franchise.

Fallout is currently enjoying a significant resurgence, thanks to Amazon Prime Video's Fallout TV adaptation. The series' success came as a big surprise, with many viewers being inspired to play the Fallout video games to explore more of the franchise's lore and history.

The latest game in the main series, Fallout 4, has soared up the gaming charts this month, with tens of thousands of players jumping in to experience (and relive) the adventure. But for those who might be waiting for what comes next in the popular series, there's a long wait ahead.

In the wake of the launch of the Fallout TV series, IGN spoke with Bethesda Game Studios' Todd Howard about the next game in the series, Fallout 5, and he confirmed that plans have not changed. While it's confirmed to be in development, it won't arrive until after Elder Scrolls 6 launches. At this time, neither game has a firm release date.

According to comments made by Xbox boss Phil Spencer during the FTC's investigation into Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Elder Scrolls 6 is at least "five plus years away". If we follow this logic for the development of Fallout 5, it will be unrealistic to expect the game before 2030, which is thought-provoking. A lot can happen in that time.

It's fair to assume that Amazon's Fallout series will be completely finished by then, and the hype surrounding the series will likely have died down. It will also be 15 years since the release of Fallout 4, which is an incredibly long time to wait for a sequel.

Either way, that seems to be the plan as Todd Howard recently confirmed that Elder Scrolls 6 remains a priority at Bethesda. "I want to avoid putting dates on anything," he recently told IGN. "I learned that the hard way. So of course our focus right now is on new development work Elder Scrolls 6, but that doesn't mean we're not making plans for other things."

Howard also shared that both Fallout 76 and Starfield will be getting updates in the future, and that Bethesda is currently hard at work on new content for both games.
