In an interview with GamesRadar, Pitchford mentioned that they are aware that fans are waiting for the next iteration of the franchise, which is why the studio will not take long to announce the future plans. Here is what he had to say:
"I haven't been perfect at hiding the fact that we're working on a lot of things and that we're working on big things. I'm sure our fans will be very, very excited about the next video game project when we're ready to announce it. And I want to tell you that we're not going to make people wait long to announce it."
As for Borderlands in general, players got "New Tales from the Borderlands" back in 2022, along with the fantasy-focused "Tiny Tina's Wonderlands." However, focusing on the main title, we have seen a massive five-year hiatus since the release of "Borderlands 3" back in 2019. Rumors of the next sequel, or "Borderlands 4", began to spread when it was said that the title would to be 2K Games' big reveal at Summer Game Fest, but later this rumor was debunked, putting an end to the hype.
But it looks like the latest statements from Pitchford have rekindled our hopes for the franchise, and those who admired the "Wonderlands" universe should be thrilled as Pitchford has revealed that the next sequel will build on it, given what a great success it was.
"We had a bigger hit with the first Wonderlands game than we did with the first Borderlands game, so that's something we can build on. I love fantasy. That's why we made the original Dragon Keep DLC for Borderlands 2 because I love fantasy so much."
"A lot of us at Gearbox love fantasy, and it kind of gives us room to play with that in the context of the Borderlands themes and universe. I think it's fair for our fans to expect more there."
As for hints about the release date or perhaps a presentation, Pitchford decided to withhold details, but he did mention that fans won't have to wait long. In the meantime, be sure to keep an eye out for the upcoming Borderlands movie, which opens in theaters on August 9 in the US.
