The advanced voice feature for ChatGPT that sparked a conflict with Scarlett Johansson was a key element of OpenAI's Spring Update event, where they also unveiled a desktop app for ChatGPT.
Now OpenAI says it will "need one more month to reach our standard for launch" of an alpha version of the new voice feature to a small group of ChatGPT Plus subscribers, with plans to provide access to all Plus- customers in the fall. One specific area that OpenAI says they're improving is the ability to "detect and reject certain content."
As for the new video and screen sharing features that we saw during the event, OpenAI writes that they will "keep you updated" on a timeline. OpenAI had said it would deliver the new features "in the coming weeks." Now the company writes that "Exact timelines depend on us meeting our high safety and reliability standards."
The assistant features, which bore an uncanny resemblance to Johansson's virtual character in the film Her , were part of OpenAI's demo, which showed how the GPT-4-powered bot could observe the world around the user and react to it in real time. It could also sustain a conversation far more naturally and tolerate interruptions with what CEO Sam Altman called "human response times and expressiveness."
However, the desktop app launched today for users on macOS. With the Mac app installed, pressing Option and Spacebar together can open ChatGPT from anywhere, so it can chat about whatever is on your screen at the time. A Windows app will be launched later this year.
In relation to the voice, Scarlett Johansson was asked if she would form the basis for the voice, which she declined. After this, OpenAI created a voice for the AI Assistant that resembles Scarlett Johansson so much that she approached OpenAI through her lawyers. They then withdrew the vote from their app.
