Apple has big plans for its Mac lineup, and while the company has launched its base M4 chip with the release of the OLED iPad Pro, we have yet to see the performance levels of the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips. It is now expected that the company will upgrade its entire Mac line next year with upgraded chips and possibly the same design for the MacBook models. Today, a prominent analyst has shared details about when users can expect to see the Mac Pro and Mac Studio with the M4 chip.
Apple will launch Mac Pro and Mac Studio with M4 chips next year with big performance improvements
Apple debuted the M4 chip with the OLED iPad Pro, which came as a surprise to many, and since the chip is based on TSMC's 3nm process, the performance improvements are significant, but close to the M3, which is also built on the same node. Apple didn't release a new Mac at its WWDC, which is notable since the company has for some time offered upgraded hardware in the summer.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that the company will upgrade its Macs later this year with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips, and we can speculate that the analyst is talking about the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. However, the company is expected to launch the M4 variant of the Mac Pro and Mac Studio next year, probably at a spring or summer event.
The updated mini is one of several new Macs arriving over the next several months. The company is preparing versions of the iMac desktop and MacBook Pro with chips from the M4 series, even as early as this year. There are MacBook Airs in development for spring, and Mac Pro and Mac Studio models are planned for mid-next year.
It looks set to be a busy year for Apple as the company aims to update its entire Mac lineup in a shorter time frame. Mark Gurman claims that the M4 MacBook Air will be updated with an M4 chip in the spring of next year, and if past trends hold true, the company will wait to upgrade the Mac Pro and Mac Studio until a later date. This means that Mac Pro and Mac Studio with M4 chips could debut in the summer of 2025.
The time frame is in line with the company's WWDC event, which is expected to take place in June, where the company will announce iOS 19 and further updates to its products. Perhaps we could see dedicated Apple Intelligence features for the devices, as the company has currently focused heavily on its AI efforts for its mobile devices, leaving the Mac line a bit behind.
We also expect the Mac Studio and Mac Pro to be redesigned as the devices have had the same design for a long time. It was mentioned in the report that Apple will redesign the Mac mini to transform it into a compact machine with powerful hardware. This could be achieved thanks to the new M4 chip and its low power consumption with improved performance improvements over the current chips.
