Artificial intelligence's colorful figure, SingularityNET CEO Ben Goertzel, plans to create a supercomputer network that could pave the way for general human artificial intelligence (AGI).

One of artificial intelligence's most colorful figures is poised to launch an online supercomputing network that will (he hopes) usher in the era of artificial general intelligence (AGI). In a statement to LiveScience, SingularityNET CEO Ben Goertzel — the man behind Sofia the robot — said his company's "multilevel cognitive computing network" will be a crucial step in the transition from AI (as we know it today) to AGI.

Using some of the most advanced hardware in the world, including multiple types of NVIDIA graphics cards, the company hopes to build a new network capable of leveraging the power of existing systems to move from data-heavy computing to lean machines that can essentially think and reason for themselves.

This global network of supercomputers will also provide the necessary computing power to accommodate such a large transition. SingularityNET representatives told LiveScience that the first of these supercomputers will go online in September, and will continue to be commissioned in late 2024 and into 2025 (depending on when their components are delivered).

To handle this seemingly massive undertaking, SingularityNET is also building its own software that oversees this federated compute cluster, which will allow data simplification and protect its most sensitive aspects from exposure.

As TechSpot notes in its description of the new SingularityNET system, these purported supercomputers could be used for everything from scientific research to national security — the same tasks that supercomputers are already being used for, but with the addition of advanced AI and, in the future, AGI.

"This supercomputer itself will be a breakthrough in the transition to AGI," Goertzel boasted to the website. " Before our eyes, a paradigm shift is unfolding."
