Apple's iPhone 16 event, which is one of the biggest events on the tech world's autumn calendar, will take place on September 9 at 19:00 Danish time. Apple uses the tagline "It's Glowtime" on an invitation they sent out to the media.
As usual, the event will take place in the Steve Jobs Theater at the company's headquarters, Apple Park, in Cupertino, California. As always, there have been rumors about the iPhone 16 lineup leading up to the event. However, it is expected to be a more muted year in terms of hardware changes, as Apple may put more emphasis on the software and AI-powered Apple Intelligence features.
Apple will definitely upgrade the chipset that the iPhone runs on, largely because they want to make sure that all their current smartphones support Apple Intelligence. Currently, only the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max have enough power to do so. Additionally, a new chipset is a necessary minimum upgrade. Apple may increase screen sizes a bit this year. The camera array may get a new look on the basic iPhone 16 as Apple ditches the square and switches to a vertical orientation.
Apple is also likely to upgrade the cameras on several models. There could be a more significant change on the camera front, as Apple is expected to add a capture button that includes zoom gesture controls. The idea is to make it easier to take pictures and record videos in landscape mode. It's unclear if the button will be available across the line or just on the Pro models.
However, it is expected that the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will lose the silent switch in favor of the action button, which debuted on the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. It's pretty much certain that iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, watchOS 11 and Apple's other major operating system updates will launch very soon after the event. However, the much hyped Apple Intelligence features will not be available immediately. Since these are part of the iOS 18.1 beta, most people will have to wait for the public rollout of that version (and corresponding OS versions on other compatible devices) to try Apple Intelligence.
It is expected that Apple will release iOS 18.1 in October. Meanwhile, Apple usually launches new Apple Watch models at its iPhone events. The Apple Watch Series 10 (or Series X) is expected to have a new chip that will either make the device more powerful or power-saving. The screen could also get much bigger, with reports suggesting that Apple plans to ditch the 41mm variant and introduce a 49mm variant.
Rumors also suggest that Apple is redesigning the strap system with new connections. Unfortunately, this may prevent you from using your existing straps on the Series X. There are also rumors that we'll see some updated AirPods at the event. We may see both entry-level and mid-tier versions of the AirPods 4 in a few weeks, with only the latter supporting wireless charging of the case.
