Apple will hold an event on May 7, the company announced Tuesday, amid rumors that it will launch the long-awaited updated versions of the iPad Pro and iPad Air next month. They did not reveal more details about the event, which will begin at 7am PT (2pm GMT).
Bloomberg News reported in March that Apple's foreign suppliers had ramped up production of the new iPads and that a launch was planned for early May. The new models would be Apple's first update to that product line since 2018.
The potential launch comes at a time when iPad sales are declining. Sales fell 25% to $7.02 billion in the first quarter, while sales of the iPhone, their most popular product, have also been declining.
The tablet market is under pressure as economic uncertainty reigns and consumers cut back on non-essential spending. But Apple expects to combat the falling demand with new products. Apple's iPad sales contributed just 5.9% to the company's total net revenue of $119.58 billion in the first quarter ended December 30.
Apple has also scheduled its Worldwide Developers Conference from June 10 to 14.
