Apple CEO Tim Cook opened Apple's new store in Shanghai and drew a large crowd, with some people waiting in line all night, according to posts on Chinese social media. Cook arrived in Shanghai on Wednesday, he wrote on his personal Weibo account.
Local media also reported that he met with Apple's Chinese suppliers, including Wang Chuanfu, founder and president of BYD, whose electronics arm supplies components to the American company.
Apple is struggling with declining iPhone sales in China and increasing competition from domestic competitors such as Huawei. According to consultancy estimates, Apple's iPhone sales in China fell by 24% year-on-year in the first six weeks of this year.
Cook is expected to travel on to Beijing to attend the China Development Forum, a meeting of foreign CEOs and top Chinese politicians.
The new store, which faces Shanghai's historic Jing'an Temple, is Apple's 57th in China and the eighth in the Chinese financial center. It is also the company's second largest flagship store after its Fifth Avenue outlet in New York City."
