This evening, at their Made by Google event, Google has unveiled their upcoming Pixel 9 series of smartphones. The series contains three new "normal" phones and in Denmark we can also look forward to being able to buy the fourth announced phone in the form of the new Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

Although many of the details and the new Google Pixel 9 phones had leaked out before today's event, it was of course always good to get the details directly from the source.

Pixel 9 in three steps

The new Pixel 9 series comes in three versions so you can choose based on your needs and your budget.

Common to all the new phones is a minor design update that cuts across all the new models. The shapes that we know from the Pixel 8 series have been adapted a bit and have now become slightly sharper in look.

Google has kept the very recognizable camera bar on the back of the phone. Instead of going across the entire phone, however, it has now become more of an island on the back. However, it is still symmetrical so that the phone does not tip over on the table.

Both front and back are designed in glass with a matte finish. Despite having glass on both sides, Google says the new phones are twice as durable as the Pixel 8 series.

Google has also presented new colors for the Pixel 9 series with four options, which vary slightly depending on which phone you choose. Pixel 9 is available in black or if aka Obsidian or Porcelain, while there is the option of a little more color with Wintergreen or Peony (pink).

The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL are also available in the black and white variant, but here the color variants are Hazel and Rose Quartz.

Pixel 9 Hardware

Regardless of which of the new phones you choose, it will be powered by Google's Tensor G4 chip with a Titan M2 security module. From here, however, the internal hardware will vary depending on which phone you choose.

The smallest phone in the new series is the Pixel 9. Here, the Tensor G4 chip is complemented by 12 GB of RAM and you will have the option of choosing between internal storage of either 128 GB or 256 GB.

With the Pixel 9, you get a phone that measures 152.8x72x8.5mm and weighs 198 grams.

On the front you get a 6.3" Actua OLED screen with a resolution of 1080x2424 with a refresh rate of 60-120Hz. It's all protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 cover glass.

Google states that the screen has a peak brightness of 2700 nits and should be 35% brighter than previous models.

The camera has always been one of the strengths of the Google Pixel phones and with the Pixel 9 you get a 50 MP main lens on the back along with a new 48 MP ultra-wide angle.

What the rear cameras have in common is that we get an LDAF sensor (Laser Detect Auto Focus) that keeps things in focus and then there is a combination of optical and electronic image stabilization.

On the front, we get a 10.5 MP front camera that comes with autofocus, so you are well equipped for even better selfies and group photos.

Google promises a battery life of more than 24 hours with the new Pixel 9. It is a 4700 mAh battery with the possibility of lightning charging. Google itself states that you can charge 55% in just 30 minutes.

There is also the option of wireless charging with the Qi standard.

The Pixel 9 can be found in stores from August 22.

Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL

If you take a step up in the Pixel 9 series, we come to the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL. For the first time, Google offers their new Flagship phone in two sizes.

However, the only difference between the two phones is the screen, and the Pixel Pro XL also uses the extra space for a larger battery. All other hardware is otherwise the same across the two phones.

The Pixel 9 Pro comes with a 6.3” Super Actua LTPO OLED screen with a resolution of 10280x2856 and a refresh rate from 1-120 Hz. Here we get a Peak Brightness of up to 3000 nits and it is of course protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 cover glass.

The Pixel 9 Pro XL comes with a slightly larger 6.8" Super Actua LTPO OLED screen with a resolution of 1344x2992 and again a refresh rate of 1-120 Hz and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 cover glass.

Here, too, there is a peak brightness of up to 3000 Nits.

Both pro models come with 16GB of RAM and are available with 128GB / 256GB / 512GB / 1TB storage options.

Again, Google promises more than 24 hours of battery with the Pro phones. The Pixel 9 Pro comes with the same 4700 mAh battery as in the smaller Pixel 9 and can be charged from 0 to 55% in half an hour.

Pixel 9 Pro XL has room for a little more battery with a 5060 mAh battery and here it is possible to charge from 0 to 70% in half an hour.

The camera configuration on the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL is the same and is what Google calls a Professional system with three cameras on the back. We get a 50 MP wide-angle camera, a 48 MP ultra-wide-angle camera with Macro focus and a 48 MP 5x telephoto lens with Superzoom up to 30x12 and optical quality at 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 5x, 10x.

With the Pro phones, you now get a Multi-zone LDAF sensor (Laser Detect Auto Focus) which ensures even better autofocus and again a combination of optical and mechanical image stabilization.

The Pixel 9 Pro XL can be found in stores from August 22, while we have to wait until September 9 before the Pixel 9 Pro is on the shelves.

Pixel 9 Pro Fold

In Denmark, we were cheated on the first Pixel Fold phone, but that changes now with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which will be available in Denmark. So we can bet that Google has learned a lot from their first foldable phone and we can now enjoy an improved version.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is only available in the black or white version, so here we are cheated of the color options that the other phones in the series have.

The design style and materials are the same as we get on the other Pixel 9 phones with glass on both sides and a silky matte finish. Google launches Pixel 9 Pro Fold and calls it currently the thinnest foldable phone on the market.

The internal hardware is, as on the other Pixel 9 phones, a Google Tensor G4 chip together with a Titan M2 security module. Here, however, we get 16 GB of RAM and the option of either 256 GB or 512 GB of internal storage.

The external cover display is a 6.3” Actua screen with a resolution of 1080x2424 and a refresh rate of 60-120 Hz. Here, too, it is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 cover glass. So, the same display that we see on the regular Pixel 9.

However, the similarities end here as the internal large screen is an 8” Super Actua Flex screen with a resolution of 2076x2152 and a variable refresh rate of 1-120 Hz. Here we get a peak brightness of up to 2700 nits.

The battery in the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is a 4650 mAh battery with the possibility of lightning charging. Here, however, Google has not put a figure on how much you can get out of half an hour in the charger.

The camera configuration on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is slightly different than on the other Pixel 9 Pro phones.

Here we get a setup with three cameras on the back: 48 MP wide angle, 10.5 MP ultra wide angle with Macro focus and a 10.8 MP 5x telephoto lens with Superzoom up to 20x and optical quality at 0.5x, 1x, 5x

With the Pro Fold we also get a Multi-zone LDAF sensor (Laser Detect Auto Focus) which ensures even better autofocus and again a combination of optical and mechanical image stabilization.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold will be available in stores from September 4.

Common to all the new Pixel 9 phones is that Google promises up to 7 years of software updates for the series. So you can look forward to good support going forward with both OS and security updates.
