After more than 18 months of waiting since the last official trailer, game developer Rockstar Games has unveiled a 26-minute extended preview of the upcoming blockbuster Grand Theft Auto 6.
The preview debuted exclusively on Netflix six hours before it was posted on YouTube, giving players their first real look at detailed gameplay. The montage video ran through enhanced graphics, detailed environments, and a series of car chases and shootouts without any speech or explanatory text. The broadcast followed a week of unauthorized gameplay leaks that Rockstar called "heartbreaking" to see scattered online.
The main characters: A "Bonnie and Clyde" relationship
The preview spent a lot of time showing the relationship between the game's two main characters, Jason Duval and Lucia Camino , which forms the core of the game's "Bonnie and Clyde"-inspired story.
Influence on the story: In an analysis published by IGN, the developers state that the characters' stories and the way their relationships develop can be influenced by the player's actions. However, it is also possible to actively "opt out" of building the couple's bond if you wish.
Real-time character switching: While the Netflix video clip didn't show the dynamics in full depth, it did cover the ability to switch control between the two characters at different times. In one clip, Jason was seen lowering Lucia from a window during an escape from a drug raid in an apartment building (a system reminiscent of the switching system with the three main characters in GTA 5 ).
Huge graphical advances and the world of Leonidas
The reception of the game's visuals was more or less universally enthusiastic, with photorealistic faces and lifelike body movements.
Detailed Environments: The preview showcased varied areas of Leonida, the fictional, Florida-inspired American state where the game is set. Detailed indoor locations were shown, including apartments, rooftop terraces/bars, and sultry underground clubs.
Body Variation: Many viewers noted the wide variation in the body shapes and sizes of the background characters, which is rarely seen in video games.
Classic GTA DNA with Red Dead elements
Although GTA 6 breaks new ground in graphics and scale, the game at its core remains true to the series' foundations:
Familiar elements: Armed coups, thrilling car chases and scenes from the criminal underworld were abundantly represented.
Satire and Side Activities: Satirical attacks on American society, dark humor in the dialogue, and a huge selection of optional side activities return.
Honor system: Rockstar appears to have built on features from Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018), including an "honor system" where the player's reputation affects relationships with other characters in the world.
No news about GTA 6 Online
Rockstar has previously stated that GTA 6 will be a purely single-player experience at launch on November 19, 2026. An online component is expected to roll out at a later date.
While the November launch is expected to be the biggest in entertainment history, the game's long-term success will be measured by how well Rockstar transitions players to a new online platform. In comparison, GTA Online (which also came out after GTA 5 in 2013) has generated billions of dollars and continues to be one of the most played games in the world. GTA 5 has sold over 200 million copies in total, and the first two trailers for GTA 6 have combined for nearly 500 million views on YouTube.
