ASUS has introduced new graphics cards, with each model receiving some sort of update. In addition, a new series called ROG Astral has been revealed, first mentioned in a leak ahead of CES.
The ROG Astral series is clearly ASUS' new flagship series. There's no sign of the MATRIX series, and based on the models announced today, it seems unlikely that the MATRIX will return - if at all. This is because the Astral series is now available in both air-cooled and liquid-cooled configurations.
ROG Astral marks the return of ASUS' patented vapor-chamber design, which allows for the integration of cooling profiles directly onto the chamber's surface without flat edges.
ASUS claims that their new quad-slot design provides up to 20% better airflow compared to the previous three-fan design. While ASUS will continue to offer three-fan models under the TUF and PRIME series, these are clearly intended for non-flagship models.
The ROG Astral series targets the high-end RTX 5090 and 5080 models.
For liquid cooling enthusiasts, ASUS has also introduced the ROG Astral LC GeForce RTX 5090. This model shares many features with its air-cooled counterpart, but uses a low-profile heatsink under the chassis. It features a full-coverage heatsink and an extra-thick 360mm radiator to cool the GPU and other heat-generating components. With up to 30% better thermal performance than air cooling, the ROG Astral LC GeForce RTX 5090 is an excellent choice for users who want powerful performance with quieter operation.
ASUS is also introducing a ROG Astral Liquid Cooled (LC) model, which has similar features, such as four fans, three of which are mounted on a massive 360mm radiator. Both cards likely use the same PCB, as ASUS' marketing mentions an 80-amp power design for both. However, they are aimed at different enthusiast groups. The liquid-cooled model also includes a full-coverage heatsink that cools both the GPU and memory.
Another notable launch is the new ROG STRIX card. Unlike the Astral series, this model will not launch as an RTX 5080 or 5090, but will instead be exclusive to the 5070 Ti and 5070 series. This suggests that Astral has effectively replaced the STRIX in the ultra-high-performance segment. Likewise, there is no PRIME RTX 5090 model, while the TUF series covers the entire RTX 50 range.
A key feature of the RTX 50 series is the new phase-change GPU thermal pad, which is becoming increasingly common among major card manufacturers.
