Nvidia launches RTX 5090 at CES

In a traditionally colorful keynote at CES, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang unveiled Nvidia's new 50 series of gaming graphics cards. It was expected to happen based on a slew of rumors and leaks leading up to CES.

Fortunately, it looks like gaming fans can look forward to massive leaps in performance, although of course it won't be free to upgrade to the new series.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 is the pinnacle of the Blackwell architecture for gamers. This graphics card is a powerful solution for content creators and gamers alike.

NVIDIA has put a lot of emphasis on design and technology in this graphics card, which costs $2000 – the biggest price increase ever for a GeForce GPU.

Updated with the new Blackwell GPU architecture, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Series utilizes next-generation hardware technologies such as 5th Gen Tensor Cores, new streaming multiprocessors, and 4th Gen ray tracing cores. The architecture also supports FP4 algorithms for even faster AI processing, which can be used by technologies like DLSS 4.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Specifications

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 is the flagship of the series. The graphics card uses the PG144/145-SKU30 PCB design and features the GB202-300-A1 GPU core. The GPU has 170 SMs enabled out of a possible 192, giving it 21,760 cores (a reduction of 11.4% from the full 24,576 cores).

In terms of memory, the RTX 5090 is equipped with 32GB of GDDR7 VRAM on a 512-bit bus. The VRAM runs at 30Gbps, providing a bandwidth of up to 1792GB/s. A larger L3 cache and new memory compression techniques further increase the overall bandwidth.

The card has a TBP (Total Board Power) of 575W. It should be noted that TBP does not necessarily reflect actual power consumption during gaming, which is typically lower. The card supports PCIe Gen 5.0 and DisplayPort 2.1b UHBR20 (8K at 165Hz), making it ideal for the latest QD-OLED panels.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Performance

In terms of performance, NVIDIA shows that the RTX 5090 delivers over 2x higher performance than the RTX 4090 in games like Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2, and Black Myth Wukong when using DLSS 4. In standard games like Far Cry 6, there is a 30-40% improvement even without the use of DLSS.

Accessibility and Design

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition is designed with a dual-slot, dual-fan cooling solution that features a compact design compared to the RTX 4090. The Founders Edition model measures 304 mm in length and 137 mm in height and uses liquid TIM (thermal paste) and a three-layer PCB – a first for GeForce GPUs. The graphics card will also be available in custom versions from partners.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 will be the fastest GPUs in the series and will launch on January 30th.
