Kevin Zhang of TSMC reveals that the company has developed its new A16 chip production process faster than expected due to demand from AI chip companies.

TSMC, the world's largest contract manufacturer of advanced computer chips and a key supplier to Nvidia and Apple, announced at a conference in Santa Clara, California that a new chip manufacturing technology called "A16" will go into production in the second half of 2026. This puts them against their rival Intel in a competition to make the world's fastest chips.

According to analysts, the announced technologies from TSMC could call into question Intel's claims to surpass TSMC in producing the world's fastest chips with a new technology that Intel calls "14A." TSMC's senior vice president of business development, Kevin Zhang, told reporters that the company has developed its new A16 chip production process faster than expected due to demand from AI chip companies.

AI chip companies "will really optimize their designs to get every drop of performance from us," Zhang said. He added that TSMC does not believe they need to use ASML's new "High NA EUV" lithography machines to build A16 chips. TSMC also unveiled a new technology for feeding power to computer chips from the back of the chip, which helps speed up AI chips and is expected to be available in 2026.

Intel has announced a similar technology which is intended to be one of their primary competitive advantages. Analysts say these announcements cast doubt on Intel's claims to reclaim the world chipmaking crown. But both Intel's and TSMC's technologies are still years away from delivering the technology and must prove that real chips match their presentations at conferences.
