Qualcomm has confirmed that its annual launch event, the Snapdragon Summit, for 2024 will take place from October 21 to 23 in Maui, Hawaii. During the event, the company is expected to unveil the next generation of its 8-series mobile platform, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.
According to an official social media post, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will enable "the next generation of mobile gaming" and is expected to be the most powerful Android smartphone chip to date.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 Brings Qualcomm Oryon CPU to Mobile Qualcomm has also confirmed that the next generation of Snapdragon 8 series chips will introduce their custom Oryon CPU architecture to mobile devices. This architecture is the same as that found on the Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus processors for ARM-based Copilot+ branded Windows PCs.
Traditionally, Qualcomm has designed their mobile CPUs using ARM Cortex core designs. However, with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, the company will use their in-house CPU design, allowing for greater flexibility and freedom to tweak the CPU as needed. The Oryon CPU cores are the result of Qualcomm's acquisition of Nuvia, a chip design company that includes veterans from the teams that designed chips for Apple and Google.
According to early benchmark leaks, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be an extremely powerful chip. The leaked AnTuTu benchmark shows the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 performing over 3 million points, making it nearly 30 percent more powerful than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is also said to offer exceptional single-core and multi-core CPU performance with maximum clock speeds of up to 4.2GHz and is expected to be manufactured using TSMC's 3nm manufacturing process.
Another leak on X by @negativeonehero suggests that the GPU on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is as powerful as the one on the MediaTek Dimensity 9300, but only with half its power consumption. In addition to these improvements, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to include a new-generation neural processing unit (NPU) to enable on-device AI experiences and is said to use the latest memory technology, such as LPDDR6, to increase efficiency.
The upcoming Xiaomi 15 could be the first phone to debut the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip, followed by devices like the iQOO 13, OnePlus 13, Galaxy S25 series and more. Overall, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to be more powerful and efficient than the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip.
Qualcomm is expected to introduce a new chip for affordable 5G smartphones at a launch event on July 30 in India. This chip is likely to significantly reduce the price of entry-level smartphones. At the same event, Qualcomm will also showcase the latest Snapdragon X-series powered Copilot+ branded Windows PCs."
