It's almost like traveling back to the mid-90s. The new "Classic Grey" edition hits the classic N64 color palette spot on: a light gray shell, the familiar red Start button, and the iconic blue and green A/B buttons.

8BitDo hasn't just made a 1:1 copy, though. They've refined the form factor to optimize weight distribution and improve grip. This means the classic (and for some, slightly awkward) three-legged shape is still there, but it's far more comfortable to sit with during long gaming sessions than the original was.
The controller is built to be versatile across platforms, supporting Nintendo Switch, the new Nintendo Switch 2, PC and Android.

The button layout is specifically optimized to work seamlessly with the N64 library on Nintendo Switch Online, so you don't have to fiddle with strange button configurations in the software to get old games to work. To bridge the gap to the present, 8BitDo has also added modern software functionality in the form of dedicated Home and Screenshot buttons, as well as a customizable Turbo function.
The most important point under the hood is the joystick. Original N64 controllers were notorious for wearing out and sagging very quickly, but here 8BitDo has implemented modern Hall Effect sensors.

Because this technology senses movement using magnetism rather than physical contact, the risk of the dreaded "stick drift" is completely eliminated, and lifespan is significantly extended. Combined with a frictionless metal ring around the stick itself, the controller delivers incredibly smooth and precise control. The experience is completed by built-in rumble (vibration), and you can choose to run fully wirelessly via Bluetooth or wired via USB-C for minimal lag.
The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller in "Classic Grey" is a dream come true for retro fans who refuse to compromise on modern hardware. Featuring Hall Effect joysticks, wireless freedom, and full compatibility with both current and next-gen Switch consoles, it's a massive upgrade over the original.

The controller officially hits European stores on March 20, 2026. With a suggested retail price of €39.99 (which comes out to just around 300 Danish kroner), it's an incredibly powerful and budget-friendly upgrade for your retro collection.
