DJI Avata 360 - choose your own angle

The hardware builds on the familiar Avata form factor, but with a massive upgrade on the camera side. The drone is equipped with two lenses and a large 1-inch sensor, which together capture the entire sphere around the drone in crystal-clear 8K/60fps HDR video (as well as 120 MP photos). The large pixels (2.4 micrometers) ensure that details are sharp, even when you fly from bright sunlight into dark shadows.

A hugely welcome design detail for FPV pilots – where crashes are an almost inevitable part of the hobby – is the replaceable front camera. If you break the lens, you can now replace it on the spot with a separate "lens kit" and included tools, rather than having to send the entire drone in for repair.

In addition, DJI has built in a whopping 42 GB of internal memory, which saves the day if you have forgotten your microSD card.

The magic of a 360-degree camera lies in the software, and DJI has packed both the DJI Fly app and DJI Studio with intelligent features to take full advantage of it.

The idea is that you fly the ride once, and afterwards you use features like Virtual Gimbal and GyroFrame to point the camera exactly where the action was. The software also offers:

• ActiveTrack 360: Automatically keeps a subject in frame, even when you take sharp turns.
• Spotlight Free: Locks the camera on a moving subject, allowing you to fly around freely and create professional "dronie" shots.
• Intelligent Tracking: Recognizes and tracks people, vehicles and pets directly in the 360-degree recording.

If you just want the classic, forward-facing FPV experience without the 360-degree editing, you can switch to Single Lens mode and record in traditional 4K/60fps.

When it comes to the actual flying experience, the Avata 360 delivers solid specs. Battery life is listed at 23 minutes, which is reasonable for a drone with such heavy image processing onboard.

Safety has also been upgraded. The drone now has omnidirectional obstacle sensors that monitor its surroundings in all directions and prevent collisions.

The connection to your DJI Goggles and controller is secured by the new O4+ video transmission system. It provides a rock-steady 1080p/60fps live feed with a range of up to 20 km. Once you've landed, Wi-Fi 6 ensures you can transfer those hefty 8K files to your phone at up to 100 MB/s.

The DJI Avata 360 looks like the ultimate machine for content creators and action enthusiasts. You get the speed and maneuverability of an FPV drone, combined with the peace of mind of knowing that the camera is capturing everything. The fact that they also make it easy to change a broken lens yourself shows that DJI listens to their users.
