The most important thing compared to a standard Joy-Con controller is of course the upgraded hardware.

A tour around NYXI Hyperion 2

NYXI Hyperion 2 comes with a practical case, so they are easy to carry around if they are not going to live permanently on your Switch.

Although they support both Switch 1 and 2, they are designed to fit on a Switch 1, where they can be clicked on like the normal Joy-Cons.

The Hyperion 2 throws Nintendo's flat, unergonomic design out the window. Instead, you get a set of asymmetrical controllers with a full, textured grip that makes your Switch feel much more like a Steam Deck. They're grown-up to hold, yet weigh just a modest 80 grams each (compared to the original's 50 grams).

Almost everything on the Hyperion 2 uses "mouse-click" microswitches. That goes for the D-pad, the large face buttons, and the shoulder buttons. It provides an incredibly satisfying, tactile response with extremely short travel. The "hair-trigger" feel on the ZL and ZR in particular is fantastic, considering the Switch doesn't support analog triggers anyway.

The biggest upgrade, however, is the analog sticks. NYXI has equipped them with magnetic Hall Effect sensors. This means that the physical wearing parts have been removed, and thus the dreaded "stick drift" has been eliminated forever. The sticks have full travel and a smooth resistance that completely eliminates Nintendo's own small, fragile sticks.

On the back we also find programmable buttons, and the whole thing is topped with RGB lighting, which can be adjusted directly on the controllers via a small button.

Software

If you want to customize the details of the Hyperion 2 more than you can through the physical shortcuts on the two controllers, you'll need to go through the KeyLinker app on your phone.

It's a bit of a hassle, as it requires you to disconnect your controllers from your Switch before they can connect. Before I discovered that detail, I was about to throw my phone and controllers out the window in frustration.

Once connected, you can check the firmware on the two controllers and customize settings for both buttons, sticks and lighting. There are quite flexible options, and although the app didn't exactly impress with its less than intuitive setup, it wasn't too difficult to customize things.

Test

I've been using the NYXI Hyperion 2 with my Nintendo Switch for a little over a week and during that time I've primarily played Super Mario Bros. U to get the platforming element covered well and then a lot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate for a lot of roguelike fighting.

In both cases, it has been a pleasure to play with the NYXI Hyperion 2, which provides a significantly better experience than the standard Joy-Cons.

The good design of the grips means that they fit much better in the hand, and I can therefore play longer without any discomfort.

At the same time, the experience of the buttons is also a big step up. It's great that NYXI has used microswitches on all the buttons, which gives a more comfortable feel than the rather soft buttons on the normal Joy-Cons.

For someone with slightly larger hands, it's also nice that the buttons and the controller as a whole are a bit larger. This provides more space and also helps provide a more comfortable gaming experience.

Price

At the time of writing, I can find the NYXI Hyperion 2 with an online price of 76,99 $. That's in some cases actually cheaper than a set of standard Nintendo Joy-Cons for and then choosing the NYXI Hyperion 2 is a no-brainer in my world.

Conclusion

A set of controllers like the NYXI Hyperion 2 is truly a game changer for my Nintendo Switch handheld gaming experience. You get a massive upgrade in the feel and grip of the device, and I was able to enjoy my games for longer without any discomfort.

If you add the hardware upgrades with nice clicking buttons and Hall Effect sticks, the experience of the NYXI Hyperion 2 has made me want to pull out my Nintendo Switch more, and it has otherwise been allowed to collect dust for a long time.

The only thing I really miss is a handle to bring the two devices together so they are also easy to use when they are not paired with my Switch.

We end up with a final score of 9 and a Great Product Award for a great upgrade for the Nintendo Switch.
