A new report reiterates that Apple is moving forward with plans to build a robotic iPad smart home control center that could cost over $1,000. For a long time, there have been rumors that Apple is working on a HomePod with a screen, as well as other "robot" smart home devices.
It looks like Apple is moving forward with at least one of these super-secret projects. Mark Gurman writes for Bloomberg that Apple is "continuing development of an expensive desktop device that combines an iPad-like screen with a robotic arm" .
The report says Apple has "a team of several hundred people" working on a new smart home device with a "slim robotic arm" that holds a large screen. The product will reportedly use actuators to move the screen, tilt it up and down and rotate it 360 degrees. It's supposedly a variation of the Amazon Echo Show 10 or Meta's old Portal.
Gurman says the device will be "a smart home control center, a video calling machine and a remote home security tool," and that the project has begun to be formalized in recent months. Apple is reportedly prioritizing development with a view to launching the product as early as 2026 or 2027, but that could be quite expensive.
Gurman says Apple is trying to get the price down to about $1,000. The project is led by Apple's experienced Apple Watch boss, Kevin Lynch. In terms of interaction, the product will reportedly be controlled using Siri and upcoming Apple Intelligence features, with commands such as 'look at me'. The device is currently being tested using a modified version of iPadOS.
If Apple can make its smart home robot work, it could be one of the most exciting product launches from the company in recent times. It will fill a real gap in Apple's smart home lineup, filling the smart home hub role currently held by the Apple TV 4K and HomePod lineup.
Although the device sounds expensive, it will definitely be cheaper than the Apple Vision Pro, which adds to its market appeal.
